Where IULs can shine
- Lifelong coverage with flexible premiums
- Index-linked growth with a floor against negative index years
- Cash value that, under current tax law, may be accessed through loans or withdrawals
Where they go wrong
- Rosy illustrations. An illustration showing high, steady rates for decades is a hypothetical, not a promise.
- Underfunding. Paying the minimum can leave too little cash value to cover rising costs later.
- Surrender charges. Walking away in the early years can be costly.
- Wrong fit. Someone without basic coverage or an emergency fund probably isn't ready.
Red flags in a pitch
- "Market gains with no risk"
- "Better than your 401(k)" with no mention of fees
- No discussion of caps, charges or what happens if rates change
- Pressure to buy today
A good agent will show you a conservative illustration and talk about the downsides as much as the upside.

An illustration shows how a specific policy could perform under several assumptions, including a conservative one. Brian will walk you through it, no obligation.

Common follow-up questions
Why do some people call IULs a scam?
Mostly because of overselling and unrealistic illustrations, not the product itself.
Is an IUL better than a 401(k)?
They do different things. Most people should use workplace retirement plans, especially with a match, before considering an IUL for savings.
What's a realistic illustration?
Ask to see one run at a lower assumed rate, not just the maximum the rules allow.
Can I get out of an IUL?
Yes, but surrender charges may apply in the early years, and you'd lose the coverage.
