The moving parts
- Death benefit. Paid to your beneficiaries, generally income-tax free.
- Cash value. Grows from premiums plus interest credits, minus monthly charges.
- Cap / participation rate. Limits how much of an index gain is credited. Insurers can change these over time within contract limits.
- Floor. Often 0% for the index credit, so a down year credits zero, not a loss. Fees still reduce the cash value in that year.
- Fees and charges. Cost of insurance, administrative charges and rider costs.
- Surrender charges. Leaving in the early years, often 10 to 15 years depending on the policy, can cost a lot.
It's not a stock-market investment
You don't own shares, and the cash value won't match the index's returns. It's life insurance first. Illustrations show hypothetical scenarios, not promises.
Who it can fit
People who need permanent coverage, can fund it consistently for many years, and like the idea of cash value that, under current tax law, they may access later through policy loans or withdrawals. Underfunding or stopping payments early is the most common way an IUL goes wrong.

Common follow-up questions
Can I lose money in an IUL?
The index floor protects against negative index credits, but fees and charges still come out, so the cash value can go down, especially early or if underfunded.
What's a cap rate?
The maximum interest the policy will credit for an index period. If the index gains more, you get the cap.
Can I access my cash value?
Usually through loans or withdrawals. They reduce the death benefit, and loans accrue interest. Taking too much can cause a lapse.
Is an IUL right for retirement income?
It can be one piece for some people, but it's life insurance with costs. For most people it shouldn't replace retirement accounts.
